Steven J. Law
Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel
Steven J. Law is chief legal officer and general counsel at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He is responsible for ensuring the U.S. Chamber’s compliance with applicable laws and regulations and for representing the organization in legal disputes, as the Chamber pioneers new frontiers of policy and legislative action on behalf of American business. Law also oversees the National Chamber Litigation Center, an incorporated public policy law firm associated with the Chamber that advocates fair treatment for business on a wide range of issues before the courts and federal regulatory agencies.
Law previously served as deputy secretary and chief of staff at the U.S. Department of Labor. As the department’s chief operating officer, he instituted performance-based pay, electronic tools, internal financial controls, and other measures that made the department the highest-ranked Cabinet agency for management excellence. Law also helped achieve landmark union transparency reforms and modernization of the department’s antiquated overtime regulations—reducing class action litigation against employers. Before that, he was executive director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, directing political strategy and advertising, and chief of staff to Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
Law is on the board of the C.S. Lewis Institute and served on the board of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, a government corporation that facilitates U.S. investment in emerging global markets. He received his J.D. from Columbia Law School (Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar) and a B.A. in music from the University of California, Davis (cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa). Law is a member of the bars of the U.S. Supreme Court, New York, and the District of Columbia.
Law resides with his wife and two children in McLean, Virginia.
