Chamber Members Take Their Agendas to the Hill

CLAC member and business owner Robert Robinson of Signal Metal Industries of Dallas discusses his meetings with members of Congress and Chamber policy experts.

A group of Chamber members visited Washington, DC, on September 17 to speak directly to their congressional representatives about such issues as union card check, labor policy, taxes, and immigration.

Members of the Chamber’s Corporate Leadership Advisory Council (CLAC), comprised of mid-size companies, met with18 members of Congress or their staffs. Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR), Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), and Rep. Phil English (R-PA) were among those who received a visit.

Before their Hill visits, Chamber members received a series of briefings at Chamber headquarters. One of the speakers, Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA), said that Congress is gridlocked because of election politics. Priorities for the next president and the 111th Congress will include addressing energy independence, dealing with growing debt, and maintaining America’s global competiveness, Davis added.

Chamber members also heard from former White House official Fran Townsend, who spoke about the private sector’s role in maintaining national security. Chamber Vice President and Chief Economist Marty Regalia gave an economic forecast and several roundtable discussions featuring Chamber policy experts covered regulatory reform, international trade, health care, and procurement policy.
