Washington, D.C.— U.S. Chamber of Commerce CEO Thomas J. Donohue issued the following statement today on the passing of Rep. John Lewis.
“Rep. John Lewis was an American hero, a trailblazing leader of the civil rights movement, and a tireless advocate of equality and economic empowerment as a long-serving member of Congress. America is a better country because of John Lewis, and we mourn his passing.
“Rep. Lewis was called the conscience of the Congress for good reason. His voice will always be with us, challenging us to continue to work to advance the ideals for which he put his life at risk. He set a standard to which we should all aspire, and the Chamber is dedicated to honoring his legacy through our Equality of Opportunity Initiative. Rep. Lewis devoted his life to ending systemic inequalities and we must do our part to address these issues so all Americans have equal opportunity to live the American Dream.”
