I am tempted to let AI write this article and be done, but content creation is one of the least useful purposes of the large language models (LLMs) right now. While these LLMs can save you time, they can also make you better through research, review, and refinement.

By leveraging AI, you can enhance your understanding of complex topics, gain new insights, and improve the quality of your work. These models can assist in generating ideas, providing alternative perspectives, and ensuring accuracy in your content. Therefore, while AI might not replace the creative process, it certainly complements and enriches it.

About IOM

This article is brought to you by Institute for Organization Management, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s professional development program for nonprofit executives.

Research

AI-powered notebook tools should be every professional’s research assistant. Provide a link to a website or video or upload a document, and the AI will provide you with a summary, an outline, and an AI-generated podcast where AI hosts discuss the content. Missed last night’s Town Council meeting?

Simply provide the video link and listen to a concise 10-minute podcast about it. Need a 100-page research paper or a piece of legislation summarized? Upload the PDF and receive a quick overview.  Unlike other language models, some tools use only the information you provide, reducing the chances of inaccuracies.

Review

Large language models (LLMs) can offer valuable insights into your organization. Various AI tools can help you better understand your organization, though some may require a monthly subscription to access features like document uploads and real-time web data scanning. Ask an LLM to analyze your website and provide feedback about your organization. If the analysis is off, consider making adjustments.

Even if you believe the AI's interpretation is incorrect, remember that others might use AI to learn about you, so it's crucial for the AI to describe you accurately. Curious if you're overlooking something in your financials? Upload your profit and loss statement, balance sheet, and other financial documents for analysis.

Refinement

LLMs can also help you refine your current processes. Tell the LLM your member retention strategies and tactics. Ask it to make recommendations to improve them. Use the LLM to analyze the data in your Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software and identify common characteristics of first-year members who fail to renew.

Not sure how to do that? Just ask the LLM with a prompt like, “I use and would like to create a scoring system to identify members who are unlikely to renew. Can you tell me how to set up the scoring system and make recommendations for point allocations?”

The LLM will tell you both the scoring model (e.g. 5 points for attending an event, 2 for a website visit and 1 for an email open. Any member with less than 12 points is a risk) and how to automate it (some tools allow you to connect your various software programs).

Bottom Line

The capabilities of AI are expanding exponentially, and one of the best ways to figure out what it can do for you is to just ask. Given its rapid evolution, if it cannot do something today, just ask again tomorrow. Thinking about AI as a process improver, what will you ask an LLM to do for you next?
