If you could create your own fantasy board of directors, who would be on it? CO— connects you with thought leaders from across the business spectrum and asks them to help solve your biggest business challenges. In this edition, we asked an expert about why small business owners should prioritize community engagement.

In this edition of "Ask the Board," we asked Nathan Miller, Founder and President of Rentec Direct, a web-based management system for landlords and property managers, to discuss the importance of community engagement for small business owners and entrepreneurs.

Rentec was recognized as a Community Champion for the CO-100. As Miller explains below, here's why community engagement is vital for small businesses.

Long-term sustainability in a thriving local economy

I believe that a strong and sustainable business model goes hand in hand with a strong connection to the community. As a traded sector company, Rentec Direct takes pride in bringing new money into our local Southern Oregon economy – 100% of our revenue is reinvested right back into our community.

We find that this approach fuels a cycle of economic vitality, creating a ripple effect that benefits local businesses and our community at large. Contributing to this thriving ecosystem will always be at the core of our business.

A strong and sustainable business model goes hand in hand with a strong connection to the community.

A network of strong relationships

We support a wide range of community events, service projects, and initiatives ranging from mental health and veteran support to youth programs and the arts. Beyond participation, we hope to address local issues and improve overall community well-being.

Our leadership team is actively involved with organizations like our local Chamber of Commerce and economic development agency. As we become more and more integrated into our community, we not only gain invaluable support from fellow business owners and community leaders during challenging times, but we also find a network rooted in shared values and mutual growth.

Strides toward a skilled workforce

For nearly a decade, we have offered the Rentec Direct Tech Mastery Scholarship, which awards scholarships to college and graduate students pursuing degrees within our sector. We're passionate about encouraging and supporting the next generation of technology leaders and innovators who will shape our industry.

Additionally, with all 17 of our employees hailing from the local area, we're not only supporting the economy, we're investing in exceptional talent right here in our home state. This commitment helps us build a strong, skilled workforce that drives our company forward.

Enhanced company culture and employee engagement

Our community involvement has positively impacted employee morale, engagement, and retention. We encourage our team members to get involved in community initiatives, both at work and in their personal lives, which helps build shared values and a sense of teamwork among our staff.

Some of our employees take on leadership roles within community projects, contributing to their professional development and job satisfaction. Seeing our employees thrive while also making a difference in the community has been an incredibly rewarding experience.

Brand visibility and customer loyalty

Community engagement has been transformative for Rentec, empowering us to build strong relationships with our employees, community, and customers. By fostering goodwill within our own community, we've built a foundation of trust that translates to our customers. For many of our clients, the connection is not just transactional, it's personal, leading to loyal, long-term relationships that allow us to serve our community and our customers better every day.
