If you could create your own fantasy board of directors, who would be on it? CO— connects you with thought leaders from across the business spectrum and asks them to help solve your biggest business challenges. In this edition, we ask an expert about how to master a balance between work and play.

This edition of “Ask the Board,” features Eric Gagnon, President and Co-founder of We Sell Restaurants, the country’s only business broker franchise with a focus on restaurants. He explains what he does to achieve and maintain a healthy work-life balance as a busy small business owner with many hobbies and interests.

I consider myself a successful entrepreneur and dedicated Pickleball player who recently helped lead Team USA to gold at the 2024 Pickleball World Cup in Peru. Despite my busy work schedule, I secured both silver (duo) and gold medals (team), showcasing my commitment to the sport. Here’s how I create the ideal work-life balance:

Identify priorities and set clear goals

Achieving balance begins with identifying what truly matters and setting clear goals for both professional and personal pursuits. By organizing responsibilities and intentionally dedicating time to each, busy entrepreneurs can maximize productivity while reducing stress. Prioritization ensures that neither work nor hobbies are neglected, fostering a sense of accomplishment in both areas.

Practice with purpose

Whether on the job or pursuing a hobby, having a clear plan for each activity amplifies its impact. Every practice session, for example, should focus on improving specific skills or testing strategies for better outcomes. This same intentionality applies to business—approaching tasks with a defined purpose leads to more meaningful progress and long-term success.

Embracing the moment and focusing entirely on the task at hand can transform performance and boost enjoyment.

Structure your time wisely

The secret to balance lies in effective time management. Structuring the day to include dedicated periods for work, personal passions, and even rest ensures that nothing is overlooked. This disciplined approach not only enhances productivity but also fosters a sense of control and accomplishment, allowing individuals to thrive in both areas.

Seek expert guidance

Tapping into the expertise of seasoned mentors or coaches can offer a significant competitive advantage. Their insights not only help streamline priorities but also uncover strategies you might not have considered. By seeking guidance from experts, you can accelerate skill development, gain fresh perspectives, and maintain an edge in your pursuits. This support has been instrumental in refining my abilities and consistently achieving success in both work and personal goals.

Stay present

Embracing the moment and focusing entirely on the task at hand can transform performance and boost enjoyment. Whether steering a business meeting or competing in a high-stakes tournament, being fully present fosters a deeper connection to the activity, enhances decision-making, and ensures the best possible results. This practice also reduces stress by keeping distractions at bay and creating a sense of flow.

Finish tasks with focus

Tackling tasks with precision and focus not only increases productivity but also frees up valuable time for personal passions. By prioritizing responsibilities, eliminating distractions, and working with intention, individuals can finish what matters most, leaving space to fully engage in hobbies and other pursuits without compromising professional commitments.
