CNI Business Discussion for a Low-Carbon Economy

At the start of COP29, Marty Durbin, Senior Vice President for Policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce spoke at Brazil’s Confederation of National Industries (CNI) event, Business Discussion for a Low Carbon Economy. This session focused on the U.S. energy transition outlook and Durbin stressed that regardless of domestic politics, the American business community will remain engaged & committed to the discussions at COP30.

The U.S. Chamber is eager to work with Brazil’s business community in the leadup to COP30 happening in Brazil next year.

Cleaner, Stronger: Global Business Leadership for Sustainability

The Chamber hosted Geoffrey Pyatt Assistant Secretary at the Bureau of Energy Resources at the U.S. Department of State along with Allyson Book, Chief Sustainability Officer at Baker Hughes, Roger Martella, Chief Sustainability Officer at GE Vernova, and Christina Shim, Chief Sustainability Officer at IBM for a panel discussion. The group explored how businesses can lead on climate solutions across various economic sectors, including technologies like artificial intelligence, methane abatement, energy infrastructure, and more. 

The Technology Imperative: Development & Global Scaling of Economywide Decarbonization Pathways

The Chamber hosted a panel moderated by Jeremy Harrell, ClearPath’s CEO, featuring Anna Shpitsberg, Chief Climate Officer for the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC). They discussed DFC's all-of-the-above approach to energy financing, the need for American innovation to bolster global energy supply chains, and DFC's growing role in global clean energy deployment. Following, Harrell sat down with Dr. Mark Berry, Southern Company, Christian Deseglise, HSBC, and Mike Train, Emerson Electric. Conversations were focused on clean energy finance and power sector decarbonization. 

U.S. Chamber Business Reception

The Chamber hosted a reception with government officials, business leaders, and stakeholders from around the world that highlighted the partnership necessary between the gov. and the business community to advance climate solutions and promote sustainability. High-level attendees included Azerbaijan's Ambassador to the U.S., H.E. Ibrahim Khazar, U.S. Amb. to Azerbaijan, The Honorable Mark Libby, and Heather Evans, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing at the U.S. Dpt. of Commerce.

The reception provided an opportunity to celebrate the actions of the business community as well as the role of our government partners.

The Bottom Line

We will continue to demonstrate the leadership of the U.S. business community in advancing climate and sustainability solutions at COP30 in Brazil, and in other events and venues throughout the year.
