The U.S. Chamber commends G7 energy ministers for recognizing the unique and vital role of natural gas in meeting shared energy security and climate objectives in the Climate, Energy, and Environment communique released after meetings in Turin, Italy, this week.

In the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, U.S. natural gas supplies helped the people of Europe, Japan, and other nations heat and power their homes, factories, and businesses during a time of great need and uncertainty. Further diversification away from Russia is necessary, and with most forecasts projecting global natural gas demand to rise well into the next decade and beyond, additional supplies of natural gas, particularly liquified natural gas (LNG), will be needed to supply world markets.

As the communique emphasizesthis demand can be met in a manner that continues progress on emissions reductions. American energy producers are leading the world in efforts to reduce methane emissions throughout the natural gas value chain and partnering with governments on the technical and policy work necessary to advance global methane reduction initiatives.

The energy and financial reverberations of war and the global energy crisis have shown that natural gas is critical to a secure and affordable energy transition.  We applaud the Italian presidency for its leadership and consensus-building on these issues, and we look forward to continued engagement with G7 nations aimed at advancing clear and consistent policies supporting responsible development of natural gas and associated infrastructure.
