While the allure of free or reduced-cost access to copyrighted digital content like movies, TV, and music might seem tempting, there are hidden costs that can be devastating.
The big picture: Piracy sites are a hotbed for malicious software, typically stylized as malware. The sophisticated criminal organizations behind these sites often disguise malware as seemingly legitimate downloads, tricking users into compromising their own security. Once malware infiltrates a device, it can operate silently, causing extensive harm before the user even realizes an issue exists.
By the numbers:
- 8 out of 10 pirate sitesserve up malware-ridden ads to their users.[1]
- Piracy operators generate an estimated $121 million in revenues by enabling malvertisers to victimize their users. More than half of that revenue ($68.3 million) comes from American consumers visiting these sites.[2]
- The estimated cost of cybercrime in the U.S. is $12.5 billion.[3]
How it works: When users visit piracy sites, they often encounter increasingly sophisticated pop-up ads, fake download buttons, and deceptive links. Clicking on these can trigger the download of malware, which can:
- Steal personal information: Keyloggers and spyware can capture sensitive data like passwords and credit card details.
- Hijack your system: Ransomware can lock you out of your device, demanding payment to regain access.
- Spread further: Some malware can use your device to spread to others, amplifying the damage and placing individual, business, and even government devices at risk.
The bottom line: Malware is only one of the irreparably harmful ways international criminal organizations take advantage of consumers and businesses to support their illegal operations. Undoubtedly, the risks associated with piracy sites far outweigh the benefits. The best way for consumers to protect themselves online is simply opting for legitimate sources of digital content.
What to do:
- Use legitimate websites: Skip the risks of piracy sites and enjoy your favorite books, movies, music, and more through platforms that legally own or license the content.
- Be cautious: Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading files from untrusted sources.
Go deeper: From raising awareness about the negative effects of digital piracy on the U.S. economy to convening stakeholders for meaningful dialogue that actively seeks solutions, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce continues to fight the threat of digital piracy and champion the importance of cybersecurity.
