Washington, D.C. –The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Executive VicePresident, David Hirschmann today issued the following statement regarding the nomination of Daren Tang of Singapore to become Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO):

“The U.S. Chamber congratulates Daren Tang on his nomination to be the new WIPO Director General. We look forward to working with Mr. Tang in his new leadership role, helping promote strong global intellectual property (IP) protections to support the next wave of innovators and creators.

“Whether it’s developing advanced therapies to combat disease, creating new life-enhancing technologies to help us balance the demands of modern life, or ensuring artists can continue to improve our lives through their works, IP is a global enabler of development and job creation.

“We also want to thank the current WIPO Director General, Francis Gurry, for his twelve years of leadership and being a true champion of the international IP system.”

The role of strong intellectual property protections to the American business community cannot be overstated. In the United States alone, intellectual property helps support over 45 million jobs and accounts for more than $6 trillion in GDP.
