After decades of double-digit economic expansion, China is struggling to produce growth at half that rate. This is the result of a property market bust, deflation, flagging consumption, and the collapse of local infrastructure investment. A debate is raging among economists over the depth of China’s troubles, with some noting enduring strengths. Pessimists, however, say China faces structural changes that will be difficult to overcome, and as a result, China’s economic power has peaked. In this edition of The Call, Elizabeth Economy, the Hargrove Senior Fellow and co-chair of the Program on the US, China, and the World at the Hoover Institution, answers questions about China's economy that are top of mind for businesses.

The Call, brought to you by the U.S. Chamber's Global Intelligence Desk, discusses the hottest geopolitical events. Host Jay Sapsford speaks with the brightest minds in global affairs to give Chamber members a head start in navigating uncertain times. Live access to The Call is a benefit to Chamber members; however, we are pleased to provide recordings for wider viewing thereafter. This episode of The Call aired initially on December 17, 2024.
