Dear Chairwoman Johnson and Ranking Member Lucas:
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce supports H.R. 3593, the Department of Energy Science for the Future Act.
As the United States’ largest supporter of research in the physical sciences, the Office of Science serves a unique and foundational role in America’s scientific enterprise. Through its direct support for basic research as well as the operation of DOE’s prestigious national laboratories and scientific user facilities, the Office of Science is critical to ensuring the long-term competitiveness of the U.S. economy and global leadership in emerging technologies.
This bipartisan legislation would provide the first ever comprehensive authorization for the Office of Science. This would set a path for steadily increasing federal investments in basic scientific research over the next five years. The Chamber commends the Committee for its important collaborative work on this issue. We urge your committee to favorably report H.R. 3593 to the full House.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue.
Sincerely,
Martin J. Durbin
