C_TEC Announces ‘New Economy Working Group’ to Advance a 21st Century Workforce
WASHINGTON, D.C.— The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Technology Engagement Center (C_TEC) today hosted TecNation 2017: A Connected Life, an event that explored ways technology is changing daily lives, businesses, and the economy. C_TEC also announced the creation of a new working group focused on advancing a 21st century workforce.
“Every day C_TEC works at the intersection of policy and emerging technology, and TecNation allows us to explore both,” said Tim Day, senior vice president of C_TEC. “While we don’t have all the answers about what the future holds, we do know that the U.S. Chamber and C_TEC have an opportunity to lead and educate elected officials and consumers alike on the benefits of innovation. Technology is not just creating businesses and jobs, its changing how companies operate and interact with their customers and the government.”
TecNation 2017 featured keynote speakers and panels that looked at how technology is changing business, entertainment, health care, government, transportation and more. It also showcased several of the latest advances in technology at an expanded demo center, C_itWork, which featured exhibitions from Ring, Consensys, Heads Up, Kabbage, Square, Expedia and Noiseaware. A separate drone aviary allowed attendees to remotely pilot a drone and explore the latest products.
Throughout the past year, C_TEC has grown its policy working groups, where members guide the organization’s policy focus areas. In 2018, the groups will tackle the issues companies care about most to ensure that policymakers do not impede technology and innovation — including the Internet of Things, drones, Artificial Intelligence, and augmented reality.
During the event today, C_TEC announced a working group that will focus on the new economy of workers, led by representatives of Expedia and Postmates. Working with the U.S. Chamber’s Labor, Immigration and Employee Benefits Division and the U.S. Chamber Foundation, the group will explore issues around education and retraining to prepare American workers to compete in the 21st century; educate legislators and consumers about technology’s impact on work; and advocate for policies that endorse the innovative nature of the new economy to support individuals and the communities where they live.
C_TEC has been deeply involved in the self-driving vehicle legislation working its way through Congress this year. Tim Day testified in the U.S. House of Representatives on June 27. On September 6, the House passed H.R. 3388, the bipartisan SELF DRIVE Act.
