WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President and Head of International Affairs Myron Brilliant today issued the following statement on the European Court of Justice Advocate General’s opinion on Data Protection Commissioner v Facebook Ireland, Maximillian Schrems(“Schrems II”).

“The modern economy is dependent on cross-border data flows and privacy is a fundamental part of data transfers. We are therefore pleased that the Advocate General has affirmed the lawfulness of standard contractual clauses, while finding no basis to rule against the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield. We urge the European Court of Justice to affirm the validity of standard contractual clauses and recognize the strength of EU-U.S. Privacy Shield as a sound basis for providing protection to data transfers that are vital to Europe’s competitiveness and economic relationship to the rest of the world.”
