WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President and Head of International Affairs Myron Brilliant issued the following statement after the European Commission released an outline of its digital policy priorities earlier this week.
“European Commission President von der Leyen has put forward an ambitious vision for Europe’s digital economy, touching on complex and diverse issues, including artificial intelligence, competition, tax, and data governance.
“The Chamber welcomes the Commission’s continued opposition to data localization requirements and supports its goal of establishing a single market for data, and we will continue to analyze the proposals and their impact on the transatlantic business community. We also urge the Commission to work closely with industry to avoid overly prescriptive approaches that would stifle innovation and undermine Europe’s own competitiveness, which depends on open markets on both sides of the Atlantic.”
The Chamber is leading a business delegation next month to Brussels, where we will engage directly with policymakers on these issues. We look forward to working together with the Commission and other European stakeholders as this process moves forward and will be formally responding to the ongoing consultations.
